Netanyahu's call to bomb Iran

The new prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to bomb Iran, within months, to halt their nuclear program, unless of course the United States does it for them:

The American president, [Netanyahu] said, must stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons—and quickly—or an imperiled Israel may be forced to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities itself.

…Neither Netanyahu nor his principal military advisers would suggest a deadline for American progress on the Iran nuclear program, though one aide said pointedly that Israeli time lines are now drawn in months, “not years.”

Rather than refute Netanyahu’s “arguments” for bombing, I’m going to call in two pinch hitters:

Andrew Sullivan

and

Daniel Larison

It would be nice to say “Sure, you go do that, we’ll watch” and not get involved. The sad thing is that he could do it and we’d be pretty much obligated to take part in their defense given as we’re sitting nice and bloody b/w them in Iraq.

That may be part of the reason Netanyahu wants to attack now rather than wait for us to retreat from Iraq.

I don’t understand why we can’t just put our foot down and tell Israel “No.”. They are too dependent on us and Europe for their own survival. Why are we letting them call the shots for us?
