Gays remain 2nd class citizens

Obama is going to give the Medal of Freedom to Billie Jean King and posthumously to Harvey Milk, both openly gay Americans. I want to applaud the President for a clear gesture toward tolerance. But I can’t, and I won’t because he’s being an a**hole to gays when it actually matters.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand reports that sincce Obama took office 265 men and women have been fired from the military because they’re gay. They were dismissed under the power of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, which Obama could override, single-handedly, with a stop-loss order.

So why won’t Obama end this national embarrassment? Public support can’t be the answer. According to CBS nearly 70% of Americans want “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” overturned. Even half the states have managed to ban this kind discrimination outright.

The original argument for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was that we couldn’t allow gays to serve openly in the military because it would destroy discipline and morale. Our allies, like Great Britain, Israel and Canada, have shown this isn’t true. Gays have served openly in their armed forces for years without any major problems.

So get on it Obama, stop being an a**hole to gays and sign that stop-loss order.

Don’t you need soldiers for your Glorious War in Afghanistan?

Getting sent home from Iraq is a gift, assuming they maintain their pension and their healthcare.
