Don’t worry about Russian submarines

Akula class Russian sub

A couple of days ago the NY Times reported that Russian attack submarines were spotted off the eastern seaboard of the United States:

While the submarines have not taken any provocative action beyond their presence outside territorial waters of the United States, officials expressed wariness over the Kremlin’s motivation for ordering such an unusual mission.

“Anytime the Russian Navy does something so out of the ordinary it is cause for worry,” said a senior Defense Department official who has been monitoring reports on the submarines’ activities.

Allahpundit and Hot Air’s army of rightwing readers are scared to death and think this is a sign of Obama’s weakness internationally. (And They aren’t the only scared right wingers)

I’m here to allay their fears and yours. Seriously, don’t worry about Russian submarines operating in the Atlantic Ocean because Russian nuclear missiles can hit us from the other side of the planet. Prohibiting their submarines from the Atlantic only delays armageddon by a few minutes, it doesn’t prevent it.

I thought this class of submarines couldn’t even launch nukes. Either way, they are in international waters, doing just what we do everywhere else in the world. Such a non-story.

Those comments on the Hot Air site are hilarious. They are scared of EMP weapons being used by the Russians. Those don’t even exist. “ITS GONNA BE JUST LIKE GOLDENEYE!”

I remember trying to comment on that site a few times. Basically anyone who disagrees with their paranoid world view is immediately shouted down for being an enemy sympathizer.

Yeah you can see some of that action on there. Its pretty fun. One guy posts a 2 sentence retort calling them idiots and there’s at least 10 messages in response. The funny part is, the same people wrote 3 or 4 responses each, to one single post. Its a troll’s dream.
