I’m confused. The guy released classified stuff. There are consequences for doing that. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good thing he released them. Just as with any sort of vigilante justice, if you go outside of the normal rules there are consequences. Bush and the torturing not being punished is a completely different issue.

    Ian,
People in our government decide who to prosecute. They can and should let this guy off. If the army doesn’t, the Obama should pardon him, just like he’s effectively pardoned torturers from the previous administration.

I’d personally rather see this guy AND Bush receive the punishment they signed up for when they broke the rules, rather than neither receive any punishment. We have rules and we have laws. They should be enforced. What if there was something given away in those tapes which could cost our soldiers lives? The guy also betrayed the trust of his fellow soldiers. The information he had needed to be released, yes, but there are probably approved legal methods for getting it out there. Whoever was blocking those legal methods needs to be punished as well.

The torturers should definitely be punished. But why this guy? Embarrassing the government shouldn’t be illegal. I’d be fine with them kicking him out of the military, but throwing him in jail is an abuse of government power. He didn’t divulge any secret weapon systems or military plans.

Right, but the rules exist for a reason. Change the rules, don’t give out get out of jail free cards.

The classification rules are being misused.
